ltd repress - a psychedelic jazz monster from stone cold estonia. ltd vinyl lp (500 copies) forerunners of underground estonian jazz-funk since 2013, estrada orchestra is a 5 pieces band based in tallinn. loosely defined genre borders situate the group of master improvisers into equal parts psychedelic grooves and avant-garde. although names like herbie hancock and mulatu astatke pop into mind, the list of kindred spirits of estrada is far and beyond to find.

for its second release, the barcelona-based independent label venom recordings follows its pioneering path into new and forward-thinking techno soundwaves. the ep features two original tracks signed by dasein, as well as two remixes from vii circle and memorial home. in their original versions, “prometheus” and “zodiac” reflect the polish duo’s distinctive signature: a blend of obscure-minded groove with cinematic melodies. both tracks are defined by the layering of deep and immersive sounds, where the combination of restless, punctilious basslines and beats with pulsating synths reverb drops climax into a pure hypnotic and spacey atmosphere. for their interpretation, vii circle and memorial home magnify the minimal and cosmic nature of the originals, crafting an ambient-like wavy tempo that traverse a dark flavoured sonic landscape with a strong emotional aura. four pieces of electronic mastery which offer a captivating journey, to be savoured in the intimacy of its own soul or to be shared with nightclubbing fellows.

unordained, brutal, and led by the rhythm of heavy bass and massive drums, disorder is an unrestrained ep, conceived in an atmosphere of distortion, edging on a certain experimental techno, equivocating between noise music and musique bruitiste. as if, here, techno were a tool of vengeance, a violent revelation with the appearance of redemption, the pieces succeed each other without any glimmer of hope appearing, and the sounds with the abrasive textures come to coil round fast and broken sequences. times are marked on each pulsation, regular and relentless. the frequencies evolve in progressions designed to install a particular tension. in -contact- some voices hidden by the filtering of a radio announce to the stoic listener and the sweaty dancers what they already foreshadowed: communication is blurred, impossible and painful. in a word, modern.

madame e. is a musical setting of georges bataille’s “madame edwarda”, a short novel that interlaces themes of eroticism, religiosity and death, and was written under the pseudonym pierre angelique in 1941, during the occupation of paris. composer mirco magnani wrote eleven electronic pieces and presented them to actor/singer ernesto tomasini. they turned them into songs by adding vocal melodies and together they produced a libretto based on bataille’s french text. the result of their dynamic interpretation is a hypnotically spellbinding performance where the audience is transported through worlds – ancient and new – and where tomasini’s haunting falsetto conveys the tormented emotions in bataille’s work and becomes the instrument that articulates the writer’s famously obscure themes.

biosphere is the main recording name of geir jenssen (born 30 may 1962), a norwegian musician who has released a notable catalogue of ambient electronic music. he is well known for his works on ambient techno and arctic themed pieces, his use of music loops, and peculiar samples from sci-fi sources. his 1997 album substrata was voted by the users of the hyperreal website in 2001 as the best all-time classic ambient album.

this is a label that i have been meaning to start for years. however, with a possible twist of fate, it is the right time and the perfect body of music to be able to commit to vinyl. these are records that i am honoured to own and play out. a new label from bristol based artist, thrilogy (also known as lee pattison who previously recorded as deepgroove (rekids, cocoon, klang elektronik, junior boys own). expect -organic dusty sampling deep house and techno from bristol artists and friends further afield- and hand-drawn artwork by local artist anna higgie. thrilogy has previously recorded on wolf music, futureboogie and om records and look forward to an ep on omena with an exciting man power remix. also, ishmael finishes the year on a high, his debut album sometime in space (on church records) showcased the multi-instrumentalist s jazzy house cuts alongside peak time techno and chilling ambient pieces. since then ishmael has been touring his live show, as well as releasing some of the most inventive house music to come out of the uk.

after a very successful label launch last year with in aeternam vale - “self destruct” ep, linda records returns with another straight talking, analog fuelled 10”. this time welcoming aboard berlin based russian artist alexey volkov. his three track ep “cold blooded genius” comes finely presented on transparent red ten inch vinyl (limited pressing). whilst staying true to its current white label feel, this time linda s trademark eyes, also a fitting red. on the a side at 45rpm the title track “cold blooded genius” and on the b side two tracks will spin at 33rpm, “unfriendly nation” & “curtains of flesh”. we hate to categorise and attempt to summarise what these pieces of music craft sound like into words, we’ll leave you to indulge for a short time to the machine noise of the highly regarded talent that is alexey volkov.

last year, music from memory released a brilliant retrospective of vito ricci. music for amiga is riccis first vinyl record of original music in decades. this project was made on the commodore amiga (with its infamous sound chip) composing all the pieces on music mouse laurie spiegels pioneering software from the mid-80s.

this album -sesiones de panamá- was born from a live session in janeiros studio, and that freeform live attitude is clearly evident in the resulting music. throughout the six long tracks of the album, the trio build up progressive atmospheric pieces of genre-defying instrumental music that sits comfortably on rhythmic patterns reminiscent of house.

new years deal - , fresh from guesting on the debut powell lp sport (xl recordings), and having released on labels such as the tapeworm, entracte, and halcyon veil, dale cornish now presents clap - four rhythmic experiments that explore the mesmeric tones of the digital clap using the ever-popular tr909 clap pre-set. sharing similarities in intention with n.m.os as strict as possible approach, pieces subtly evolve and mutate around the clap to generate motion, tension and action. oolovka takes an unashamedly joyous look at the clap, where melodic repetition whirls and whirls until it takes on a form of mesmerising minimalism – perhaps taking its cues from a modern take on steve reichs ‘music for 18 musicians’ as a backdrop for the clap to playfully roll over and mutate into a sound which is both refreshingly light hearted yet steeped in rhythmic experimentation. cxema takes us a into a tenser, more claustrophobic space where a heads down pulse keeps the body locked until the fog is occasionally broken and the tension momentarily cleared via delayed claps and familiar sonar tones. this vibe continues into isolate with cornish upping the anxiety by using the clap as a foreboding menace. coming across like an inspired soundtrack to a military performance piece the concern appears to revolve around strict precision and strict movement and how the clap can be used to enforce and heighten this functional display. before encore winds things down by stripping things back to the bare minimum for movement – a single effected clap gradually layers and layers itself to create pleasingly odd high tension atmospherics solely through a meticulous process of delicate rhythm and repetition.

hauschka is a composer, songwriter and experimental musician who has brought an exciting new perspective to the prepared piano. the prepared piano – a technique for getting new sounds from the acoustic keyboard by resting pieces of paper or drumsticks on the strings of the instrument - has been used for centuries, but hauschka was unaware of the tradition when he began exploring ways to get new sounds out of his bechstein grand upright.
